The Power Of One

one+fingerHow was Rome built? They say one stone at a time.

Often, when confronted with a big task — in business, too many changes to make, too many customers to call — we get overwhelmed, and “paralysis analysis” sets in.

We get stuck in our tracks, unable to make a move. That’s where the power of 1 comes into play.

To make ANY positive changes in your life, all you need to do is start with a small, tiny step of 1: 1 %, 1 minute, 1 hour, 1 mishna, 1 DAF.

I always say to my self, “a poor plan executed is a million times better than the best plan, not-executed.”

No matter what you choose as your “1,” the main thing is that you start moving.

To be successful in business requires learning new skills. You may not have the time, but you have the time to learn one page a day. If you are a sales person, call one person a day. You start with one, because it will get you moving. Eventually, momentum builds and are on your way to where you need to go.

Just Think. Call one customer a day, and in one year you’ve called 365 customers. Call three customers a day, and you’ve called a thousand. Can you imagine what your business is going to look like when you call a thousand customers a year?

Or, in your personal life, why not try incorporating these powerful “1s” every day:

  • Want to grow closer to your children? Have 1 minute of private time with each child daily.
  • Want a better marriage? Try paying your wife one compliment daily.
  • Want to learn the Spanish language? Start by learning one new vocabulary word a day.
  • Want to write a book? Write that book one page at a time one day at a time.

Take Away: Start with a plan and a commitment that you are going to do. The power of one is huge.

Already do that? Then push yourself, do one thing more than you usually do to push yourself to the next level.

Anybody that wants to make positive changes in their life needs to do a little more than what they’ve been doing. Doing the same old thing will give you the same old thing. If you are at step 1, then you need to focus on getting to step 2. if at step 51, then 51. The point is that you got to start with the “1.”

One is not overwhelming. You CAN commit yourself to one. And if it goes well, and you are ready for more, you can crank it up a bit, to 2 or 3, but start with 1.

Today, there are so many free resources online that there really isn’t ANY excuse not to realize your goals and dreams. You can literally learn ANYTHING you wish online for free. Want a university education? Colleges are putting up whole curriculums online for free — it’s called courseware, check it out!

One thing you have to remember, DON’T GIVE UP! You must be persistent, especially in today’s instant world, where people give up way too fast. Please don’t be one of them.

You just have to realize that:

  1. You are in charge of your outcome;
  2. Make a decision to change for the better;
  3. Set your goals;
  4. Make a plan of action;
  5. Set your baby-steps of 1; and
  6. move.

Time passes; that’s a fact. One month from now, thirty days will pass — that’s 43,000 minutes. All you need is one minute a day to make some changes in your life. You WILL be 30 days older in 30 days… Why not be 30 minutes wiser, too?
