Event + Response = Outcome
I met a man in shul this week who had been recently laid off from a job after twenty-five years of service. Now middle-aged, and with no relevant skills to market himself within a changed business landscape, I felt nothing but sadness for him. He is in a tough situation, but so are many right now.
The essential question facing him and others like him is: What are you going to do about it? And to that I say: Events + Response = Outcome.
You may not be in control of the bad card you were dealt, but you are in control of how you respond to it. And how you respond to the event affects the nature of the outcome, whether it will be good or bad.
